Hot springs are known to age over time, and it is said that fresh hot springs that have just sprung up from the ground are the most effective, but if they are not used in a way that is appropriate for the spring quality, they may actually be detrimental to illness. Therefore, the precautions to take when bathing are generally as follows:
(1) When starting hot spring therapy, limit bathing to about once a day for the first few days, and then limit it to two or three times a day.
(2) The period required for hot spring therapy should be approximately two to three weeks.
(3) After starting hot spring therapy, you may experience hot spring irritation (bath reaction) approximately three days to one week later.
During the period when you are experiencing hot spring sickness, reduce the number of times you bathe or stop bathing altogether and wait for the symptoms to subside.
(4) In addition to the above, please be aware of the following points when bathing.
1. Bathing time varies depending on the bath temperature, but it should start out as 3 to 10 minutes, and can be extended as you get used to it.
2. Generally, you should stay still while bathing, except in the case of exercise baths.
3. After bathing, do not wash off the hot spring ingredients that have adhered to your body with water.
(On the other hand, people who are prone to hot spring sores should wash their bodies with fresh water after bathing or wipe off the hot spring ingredients.)
4. After bathing, be careful not to catch a cold and rest for a certain period of time.
5. Be careful as sudden exposure to hot water can cause dizziness.
6. It is advisable to avoid bathing immediately before or after a meal.
7. Be especially careful when bathing after drinking alcohol.
